Stepping Down from Bodhi Linux Lead

I am sure anyone who has been following the Bodhi project has taken note that the 3.0.0 release timeline has not happened as expected. Due to a variety of reasons I would like to announce today that I will no longer be actively developing Bodhi Linux.

Bodhi has been a labor of love for me that was started nearly four years ago. In that time all of the other original team members fell away. In fact I have worked with dozens of different people over the course of the last few years. I have made friends and learned more than I could have ever imagined.

With that being said, even though I no longer have the bandwidth to actively develop Bodhi, I know many enjoy using the project. So if you are reading this and have an interest in picking up where I am leaving off, please contact me. All Bodhi related code can be found on my GitHub page and I am more than happy to help guide you in the right direction with how things work as you are getting started.

To our users out there, thanks to your amazing support earlier this year our existing servers are paid for through the end of April 2015. So even if no one chooses to pick up where I have left off, your existing systems will continue having repository access until this time. Edit: Bodhi isn't dead, just changing hands.

All in all, it has been fun. I started Bodhi during my senior year of undergrad and have continued to guide it through moving three times, graduate school, getting married, several different jobs, and even my first wonderful kid:

I'd like to close with saying thanks to the Bodhi and open source community as a whole. In general you have been very supportive of the small project I started to Enlighten the world.

  1. Thank you for all your hard work in producing such a great product. I have different versions installed on 2 netbooks. It is so lightweight and easy to use, it has made a huge difference to using my machines. I hope someone takes up the mantle and keeps bodhi alive.
Good luck in all your future endeavours.

  3. Bodhi Linux is one of the best and lightest distro out there. I Have been using bodhi since 2 years. I installed many distro on my notebook but I kept coming back to bodhi. The beauty and performance of bodhi kept me hooked up. Thanks Jeff for your hard work and your efforts you put in to give us bodhi Linux. Really appreciate it. I hope someone as good as you pick up the work where you left.

  6. John, it's the second time someone quits the distro development before I can try it. :(
I would like to contribute, though. More on that when I'll wipe trash and everything else from my machine lol

  7. Jeff - I completely get it, being a father myself, and I want to thank you for all you've done in bringing a solid, world-class distro to life. My hope is that someone/others in the community pick up the baton and keep running with it. Good luck!

  8. Jeff, thank you for all your work, Bodhi Linux is one of the few distros that work on the original eeePC. Best of luck. Enjoy your children, as my mother said when I turned 60: "It seems like it was yesterday they handed me a baby boy, and now he is a senior citizen"

  9. Jeff,

    You did good, bro!

Real life should be your priority; family, friends, work, etc. You just don't have time for it all.

Bodhi is/was an amazing distribution. You made it possible. Hopefully, someone will take up the project and move ahead.

Wishing you and your family health and contentment.

  11. Thank you so much for all the hard work you've put into this project over the years. Bodhi is the best of the light-footprint distros and Enlightenment was a great choice.

Go and have a wonderful life, Jeff. You've done great work here. Thanks.

  13. Thanks for the great lightweight distro and all of your hard work. I installed Bodhi on a older notebook and it made it look brand new. I'm sorry to see it go, hopefully someone will pick it up. Best wishes as you go forward in your life.

God bless you ;-)

  17. Thanks, Jeff. You did a very important job in bringing Enlightenment to the masses; I wish people would took care of things like EDE, for instance, like you did with Enlightenment.
I hope someone steps up as maintainer of Bodhi, but for you I wish you can take some time to be with your family, specially your son. Some things in life are way too ephemeral, before you notice he'll be going to school. Be sure to teach him some things and to learn from him a lot of things.
I know your kind: you do things not because of others, but because there's joy in doing the good work.
I hope you can spare some minutes now and then to keep writing just like you did before -- that will be excellent, too.
    See ya!

  19. Thank you Jeff.
I love bodhi and have turned several other people on to it. It has also renewed my long-standing love for enlightenment, and I hope both projects continue successfully.

Enjoy and cherish your family, and godspeed to you all in your future endeavors.

  20. Jeff-
Thank you for all that you've done. Bodhi is an amazing distro that I've had the pleasure of running on a small laptop for the last few years. Bodhi made it possible for that piece of hardware to live past it's prime, and made it possible for me to do my job in some remote places. It, and you, will be missed.
Enjoy your time with your kids. It doesn't last nearly long enough.
    Thank you.

  24. Thank you so much Jeff, for not only putting life back into computers that had long been written off as dead, but also for Enlightening me. I wish you the best in life. Bodhi Linux is truly amazing and there really is no other minimalist distro quite like it. I sincerely hope others step up to take the reins and it continues to fulfill the vision you set out for it for years ago.

  38. This is truly sad news to hear. Thank you for all the hard work you have done. Bodhi was a great distro and it was the name of my little daughter's toy bear :) Well, I was driving one day with my wife and daughter in the back seat and she kept crying. You know two year olds, they cry. I stopped at a gas station and bought her a big toy bear and she asked me what the bear's name is. I thought for a few seconds and said "I guess her name is Bodhi". That stopped her crying for the rest of the voyage. She still keeps that bear next to her bed, as I keep your distribution. Once again, thanks for all the efforts and I wish you a happy life with your family.

And real life is much more important than anything else. Life's just too short to spend it in front of a computer screen for too long.

I'm using and supporting elementaryOS now and it's a well designed and light distro as well.

Wish you all the best in your life !

  47. Beyond domestic considerations that I understand and respect ... and I must admit the shock ... the drama is for me ... I use this ad Bodhi from the start and I EVER since my the fascinating world of Linux, never did me any distributing all the more attractive ... I really wish that this project is so bright contributors Bodhi ...

"My dear wife, you get something twisted out of your insides by all this blood, filth, and noise. I wanna stay changeless for you. I wanna come back to you the man I was before. How do we get to those other shores? To those blue hills ? Love. Where does it come from ? Who lit this flame in us ? No war can put it out, conquer it. I was a prisoner. You set me free.

We. We together. One being. Flow together like water till I can't tell you from me. I drink you. Now. Now.

This great evil. Where does it come from? How'd it steal into the world? What seed, what root did it grow from? Who's doin' this? Who's killin' us? Robbing us of life and light. Mocking us with the sight of what we might've known. Does our ruin benefit the Earth? Does it help the grass to grow or the sun to shine? Is this darkness in you, too? Have you passed through this night?

We were a family. How'd it break up and come apart? So that now we're turned against each other. Each standing in the other's light. How did we loose the good that was given us. Let it slip away? Scatter it careless? What's keeping us from reaching out? Touching the glory?"

  51. Thank you very much Jeff and all others who helped create and maintain Bodhi Linux. I really enjoyed learning with Bodhi. You guys have left some awfully big shoes to fill, for anyone wants to dedicate a distro to the Enlightenment Desktop... I had a bad feeling when the initial desktop setup steps were not going to be part of the latest incarnation of Bodhi, in a selfish way I am pleased as she'll never have lost that in a final release now.. A lot of advice surrounding Linux recently is encouraging homogenisation or making it easier for x win users. Long live enlightenment, cheers Jeff

  52. Bodhi has been a favourite distro of mine for many years. I've installed and run it in many places where others refused to go, and it has been truly outstanding all along. I feel somewhat gutted about this news, but such is life, and it does go on. Many thanks for your tremendous efforts, and having the tenacity to turn your vision into stunning reality.
