Bodhi Linux 1.2.0 Released

20,000 forum posts and over 100,000 downloads later the Bodhi team and I are proud to announce our second point release - Bodhi 1.2.0 Current Bodhi users can easily update their system to this latest release. This release is largely for keeping packages up to date, so the following are the core system packages that have been updated for this release:

Linux 3.0.0
Enlightenment built from SVN on 09/06/11
Midori 0.4.0

As many current Bodhi users know, we often update software in our repository. Just some of our recent software updates include:

Firefox 6.0
Chromium 13
Opera 11.51
nVidia 280.13

Speaking of repositories, we have been including the awesome GetDeb repo by default in Bodhi since our early releases. These repositories serve many people and often have bandwidth issues. Because of this we are now hosting our own mirror of GetDeb that will be used by default. Those with current Bodhi installs can update their sources.list to use the Bodhi mirror by replacing their current GetDeb line with the following:

deb http://getdeb.bodhilinux.com/getdeb lucid-getdeb apps games

There is more to this release than just packages though. Our document team has been working furiously to improve our docs, both on our wiki and our locally installed pages. Our Quick Start guide gained Dutch as a language this release, bringing out total number of languages to eleven. Our recently published "Bodhi Guide to Enlightenment" is also now stored locally for offline use in the Midori web browser.

In terms of functionality all of our default profiles have undergone minor changes to improve the user experience. The largest of which have gone into the fancy and tablet profiles. The fancy profile now has some penguins on your desktop by default and the tablet profile gained a sleek, touch friendly method of changing between applications. We have also added a new default profile with this release - Tiling. It has the tiling module enabled by default to make organizing the windows on your desktop take far less time.

Finally, one of the things that sets E apart from other desktops are it's choices of wonderful themes. Bodhi 1.2.0 brings with it seven new default themes for the desktop. The default E theme got a fresh new wall paper. Also included are Angelic2, Blue Angel, Migeul, Mystery, Passion and finally Smoke.

Oh, and of course download links! You can grab the high speed torrent download (recommend!) here or can find our direct download hosted by source forge here. Also - don't forget to vote in our desktop of the week contest. Our winning desktop from last week:

Have any questions/input/ideas feel free to drop a comment below as always.

Edit/Update: We are raffling off a Bodhi Linux powered Tablet/Netbook.

  2. x64 will arrive with our 2.0.0 release next summer. At this point back porting all our changes to a new architecture would take far more resources than our team currently has available.

  3. Go on, Jeff - give me a clue! I'm logged out on the liveCD, do you want to tell me the default username and password so I can log back in?!
For liveCD, many distros display these values at the top of the log-in screen!

    ReplyDelete
  4. "bodhi" with no password has always been the live login :)

  5. Gee, that was quick. Many thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Ahh jorge! Those are all non-stock modules now. The module format changed recently so I need to recompile all of those so they will work again. Will get it done in the next couple of days, be checking the repos for updates :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. As a heads up - itask-ng is no longer maintained. It's code base is moved to the newer engage module.

  15. sorry..i was busy....thx for youre help once again..i will wait for the updates...bodhi is the best os out there,dude....question???? is normal that i still have some ecomorph effects in my windows[open, close, minimize and restore] or i just got lucky???..lol

  17. Can't wait for x86_64 next summer. Thats when I will start using Bodhi. Make it a rolling release with a fully configurable package management system like Gentoo and bingo... you will have a winning distro that even new users can use.
Congrats on your new point release.

  18. this is i386,
would be a good idea if has compiled in i686!!!

  19. Prior to upgrading, I had customized my profile with different shelves, backgrounds and launchers on each desktop. After upgrading, I selected my custom profile, made a slight change and saved it. When I relogged in, e17 faults and F1 is ineffectual. I can only exit (F2), delete .e and start over. Do you think the recompiled non stock modules will help fix this in the coming days or will I need to reconfigure my custom profile?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Have you tried rebooting yet Scott?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hi,

How to disable wobbly effect? its quite annoying.

    thanks

    ReplyDelete
  22. can i change setting back to desktop only with no 3 d effect on an installed bodhi ?

    ReplyDelete
  23. could you tell me which version of ubuntu is this based on?

    ReplyDelete
  24. hi jeff..any chance you can tell me the module list that work in this new version?.....thx for youre help, dude!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. Disable window shake - http://www.bodhilinux.com/forums/index.php?/topic/1608-how-to-turn-off-window-shaking-effect-solved/

    Loosely based on Ubuntu 10.04

To change desktop setups, change your profile.

All modules will work eventually again. Just gotta sort through a whole bunch of source code.

  27. I checked it out. 1.20 works great, looks beautiful.

I would like to make the switch, but the mouse still can't switch to left-handed. That is a non-starter for me. I cruised the forums, complaints are there, no fix. It's a shame.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Wanted to know what does based on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS mean? Is it just security updates will be as per 10.04 repository or it's more than that. How is it different from Debian squeeze/wheezy installation w.r.t all software and kernel upgrades, will those be still available if this is installed?

I know somewhere it's mentioned as a semi-rolling release distro but little detailed explanation from the creator might help :-), assuming i'm not asking too bad a question :)

Overall it looks and works just awesome. Also if i can find some details on this awesome desktop setup (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5YdBcGZ66JY/TmAK2Na9C5I/AAAAAAAABCo/j_eAWcwsxz4/s1600/lostbumpkin.png) i would be very grateful for the info.

  29. First of all, congrats on the new release.

Secondly, can you tell me if it is necessary to install bodhi to have the bodhi setup? I am running Ubuntu 11.04 and i wanted to try it. Can i just add bodhi linux repos to sources.list and use them? I guess it won't a total minimal setup as bodhi but still!

    Thanks in advance.

  30. Murali - It means we start with a 10.04 base so we still get security updates for three years and then we roll new package updates for popular software on top of this so things stay current for our users. You can upgrade from minor release to minor release (such as 1.0.0 to 1.2.0), but major releases will recommend a reinstall.

With regard's to Bumpkin's desktop - you should head over to our forums and ask him how he did it :)

Adhijeet1in, There has been some talk on our forums of adding the repo to an Ubuntu installed system. This is not recommend, but it is possible. Just know if you take this route we cannot provide support for your install because of the large core package version differences between Ubuntu releases (EG: You might see bugs/issues the main Bodhi release does not have)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thanks Jeff, it's clear now. Will definitely go to the forums and ask the desktop question there :)

  32. For the Dell Dimension 2400 and Optiplex GX260, the liveCD boots as far as the PROFILE screen but doesn't continue to the destop.

  33. All debian and ubuntu derivatives have found my wireless card pretty easily except for bodhi. It is an rtl8187 driver. Any solutions?

  35. Hello Jeff,

Looking a Bodhi 1.2.0 as Live CD Linux with Laptop Theme.
    Very interesting distribution.

One nit: Right-Clicked on tray clock and gadget menu was off the screen to the right and thus unreadable. Should deploy to the left when against right side of screen center.

    My Background:
I am use to Puppy Linux (puppylinux.com) and have 15 various puppy distibution loaded on my laptop as frugal installs. A frugal install is 3-4 files in a partition/subdirectory (initrd, vmlinux, linuxdistro.sfs, and optional driver.sfs) files. These 3-4 files are readonly and are the whole distribution. A ext2/3 save file is created on the first exit which is read/write which contains the changes and user settings and user installed software. This file is extensible in 128MB increments.

My Question: Can your distribution be installed as a puppy-like frugal install on the hard disk of my computer?

Will explore more of this great distribution. Found out about this by reading the Puppy Slacko 4.99.4 Beta 2 forum.

    ThePorter.

  36. When you mouse over to the right the menu automatically moves itself onto the screen so you can read it. This is Enlightenment itself and is done by design.

    ReplyDelete
  41. If they still aren't working at this point it is an issue with the module itself. Please file a bug report with the module's author.

    ReplyDelete
  42. ahhh!!!! jeff-'Please file a bug report with the module's author'-i dont speak that language..lol...am just an average user....anyway, am very happy with what version 1.2.0 have right now...so i will wait for the next updates to see if this dilema come to a end...thx for help people like me!!!!!!c yaaaa!

  43. jeff..i dont know if is ok to do this...but i did it...and work for me...i went to /usr/lib/enlightenment/modules/rain/linux-gnu-i486-ver-pre-svn-08..and saw that the i486 is out-dated...so i rename the file[/linux-gnu-i686-ver-pre-svn-08]and walla!!!rain module works again!!!..im just an amateur user,so you can image my emotion..lol..just to let you know cause you help me a lot........

  45. Hey Jeff. I'm just a novice on computers but was able to get bodhi installed on my new Windows 7 pc. Trouble is, I thought it would dual boot on startup but Bodhi loads only and I cannot access my windows at all. What to do?
    Thanks,
    Rod

  47. jeff,i would like to know what development system are you using on bodhi...example java,python....thx for you help.....

    ReplyDelete
  48. The more complex parts of Bodhi are all written in C because it is super fast.

Simple things are typically done using bash.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Is there a boot parameter to start the installation directly?

    ReplyDelete
  50. No. Ubiquity only supports that feature for GTK based desktops.

    ReplyDelete
  51. hi jeff....i did a new 1.2.0 installation and everything is good, but i do not have rain module in synaptic..i found this from you: "Fun huh? For those interested in trying this on their own Bodhi desktop I have just uploaded this module to our testing branch this evening. It will make it's way into the main repository in a few days hopefully. If you don't want to wait the .deb can be got from here."..you were talking about penguins module..and was a .deb...can you please, give the rain module .deb..is the only one missing...ecomorph working great!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Refresh your synaptic - it is in the main repo now.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I tried to install it on my Acer Notebook with an E-350 processor and ATI Radeon Graphicsl but it wouldn't install due to a blank sceen at bootuip with a USB stick as the install medium

  54. Check your MD5Sum, make sure the USB drive was cleanly formatted. And also - make sure to press enter :)

  55. sup jeff!!!..in every reboot i have to set my resolution display all over again...i know kubuntu has the same problem, but in version 11.10 they fix that..is bodhi nation working with that too???..thx for ur help!!!

    ReplyDelete
  56. That is on the TODO list for E17's final release yes. In the mean time though if you head over to the forums I'm sure you can find someone that would help you setup a command to run on start up to set the proper resolution :)

  57. sup jeff!!!!..the other day i had a ugly day cause after the last enlightement and modules update[tru synaptic] my bodhi crash..i did a hole new install and after a few hours i found the reason why...the desktop tablet is not working for me..i mean, when i try to switch to tablet desktop the system crash and then a have the big dilema cause do not let me in anymore...then send me to the log in window and cant do nothing from there..i change the desktop manager[ecomorph, default, enlightement] but always keep loading and loading and stay that way...i already did a 2nd fresh install[i have no problem with that cause bodhi is so easy to configure,hehe]..but my question is..IS THERE A WAY TO LOG IN AND CHOOSE YOUR DESKTOP FROM THE TERMINAL???? THAT WAY IF A HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AGAIN I CAN LOG IN THAT WAY...THX LIKE ALWAYS FOR YOUR TIME,DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  58. There appears to be an issue with the latest E build preventing the tablet profile from loading. I will address this as soon as I return home this evening.

For now simply reinstall the older version and don't upgrades your E packages if you need to use the tablet profile.

    ReplyDelete
  59. "For now simply reinstall the older version and don't upgrades your E packages if you need to use the tablet profile."...I WILL DO THAT..thx!!!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Issue sorted in the latest E updates jorge - should be safe to upgrade and use the tablet profile again :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. tablet issue fixed....but then some modules after the updates did not work at all...at 8:10 pm i download new upgrades[synaptic] and the modules were fixed too....but the only one who keep giving me problem was ecomorph...i check usr/lib/enlightement/modules/ecomorph and found this:"linux-gnu-i686-ver-pre-svn-08"..i think should be:"linux-gnu-i486-ver-pre-svn-08"...the rest of the modules are "i486"..anyway,great job fixing the tablet desktop issue{that is one of the best desktop choice out there}and looking foward to the ecomorph problem..thx jeff..ahhh,by the way..the new bodhis themes are AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Sorting these few extra modules is on my TODO list.

Ecomorph and penguins are currently having this issue. Find any others let me know - should be fixed some time tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  63. so far so good with penguins module..no problems with the little guys..i try to rename ecomorph i686 to i486..but nothing so far...keep crashing if u try to open any windows or applications...for now i keeped UNLOAD..all others modules working great in 7 different desktops, with every desktop having there own mixed combinations of modules....looking foward for tonights upgrades or any time u can.......P.S:screenshot module needs a package named EMPRINT to work...for sure u know that, but maybe u can include that package in the screenshot module downloads[like a dependence]..thx like always!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. at 5:45 pm i received and i did the ecomorph and penguins upgrades...in the first 25 minutes ecomorph working great..no crash at all..i will keep using all the desktops tru the weekend and i will send a post monday to tell u if something goes wrong...and if something goes wrong, for sure is something light like always, cause BODHI is hard rock stable....

    ReplyDelete
  65. Great to hear that jorge - if you'd be so kind please go make an account on our user forums and start posting issues there. I check it far more often than these posts and then other users can see issues you are having so I have less repeats of bug reports :)

    ReplyDelete
  66. i did what u told me..am a member of the bodhi nation forums!!!!!!!i sign in by jorge-puerto rico..c ya there!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  67. sup jeff!!!! QUESTION???? why bodhis midori browser is on version 0.4.0,when the latest version is 0.4.1...??..do bodhis users have to add the midori repo themself, cause i have nothing by synaptic...c yaaa!!!..BTW-for sure, forums are not for me>>LOL..
