Bodhi Linux 2.0.0 Release Candidate

A little over six weeks ago I posted about the first Bodhi Linux 2.0.0 public image. We have had three other builds release since then and today I would like to announce the availability of build 5 for download. I am stamping this build as our "release candidate" meaning that is is a stable working environment and something extremely close to this release will become our "stable"/final 2.0.0 release by the end of this month.

What is missing from this release still? Of note our AppCenter is still in the process of being transitioned over to work fully with this new release. Meaning a few of the packages there might not be found yet in the 2.0.0 repositories. If you do find an application there that doesn't install properly I encourage you to let us know on our user forums. Also worth noting is that none of the current .BOD files obtained via the "Download" buttons are functional with 2.0.0 and they should not under any circumstance be installed on a 2.0.0 system. There will be an announcement posted here when they are ready.

Finally - you can find the 32/64bit disc images for download via source forge here.

  2. I so want to try this...alas, I'm staying away from Canonical's code base, so I won't be able it.

    1. Do you avoid everything Debian based as well then? Because Canonical's team contributes lots of stuff to them.

  3. Hi Jeff, when I shut down my netbook this RC gives an error about dbus not being correctly installed, checked and dbus is installed..

    1. Dbus error message is harmless. It is displayed because the Ubuntu shutdown scripts conflict with the E17 shutdown method.

  4. Jeff, I've had great success with release 4. 66 years old and new to linux (moved from mint katya to bodhi 1.3). You and your team have created an ideal distribution/web site for a pure end-user (vym, zim, yEd, writer) such as myself. Thank you !! (finishing a large word 2007 project so Bodhi 2.0 is running inside VVox with a full 1920 x 1080 window -- yipee)

  5. Hi Jeff,
I am using Bodhi for a week now. Going to replace my LM lxde once 2.0 is released. I am using the stable 1.4 so far. This is lightning fast on my old laptop.
As a new user I have a doubt. Can I use use Chromium as a default browser but still keep the "add software" option directed to Midori?
    Thanks a lot

    1. Unfortunately the "add software" triggers your default browser to open the page - however you can easily launch Midori and navigate to appcenter.bodhilinux.com in the URL bar to keep installing software via Midori on the AppCenter while still having Chromium as the default browser.

  6. Hi Jeff,
A follow up question. Why not firefox, skype, opera and some other apps are not showing up on synaptic package manager? Do I get them only on Bodhi App center or from their respective home page or using terminal? I know I am missing some thing here. Just want to confirm this.
    Thanks a lot

    1. Firefox and Skype are both in synaptic. Opera and some others might currently be missing - we are in the process of making sure all the software that was in the 1.x.y repos is in the 2.0.0 repos now.

The app center, synaptic, and terminal all pull software from the exact same place. So if it exists in one it will be in the others.

  7. Hi Jeff,
Thanks a lot for your immediate response.
Yes. I missed that completely. I am using Midori browser just for app center usage while using chromium for web usage.
I am playing with the last stable release and will wait for 2.0 stable release. Then I will move to that.
Are there any major differences between the two apart from ubuntu versions.
    Thanks a lot

  8. Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the good work, I've been trying a lot of distros for my old EeePC and unfortunately Ubuntu-based distros would grow to forget they were supposed to be low-spec friendly first.
Does 2.0.0 still have the same minimum requirements (128MB RAM)? Not that it should be a priority of course, just to check.

    1. The Bodhi desktop will boot on 128megs of RAM yes. However just like 1.4.0 - if the system has less than 178megs of RAM you will need to mount and use SWAP to use the graphical installer.

  9. Do You plan to use Entrance as default ? It seems to be more "E17 way" :-)

    1. Entrance is dated and has been so for over a year. It is no longer functional with the current E/EFL release.
